Article marketing?

By admin | August 26, 2008

So how many times have you heard the phrase but not had the faintest idea what it’s about?

Yeah well me too but I don’t like not knowing about things. I’m the person who looks up a word immediately if I don’t know what it means.

Well here’s the good news. We’ve put together a free book about how to become an article marketing guru in just 24 hours, and how to give your profits a boost by doing so.

A change coming?

By admin | August 9, 2008

I was happy - delighted actually - when I saw a clip of a video from Tim Brocklehurst - the ‘my viral spiral’ bloke (don’t worry it’s not a plug) showing his email account.

I thought that these big guru types would have neat organised inboxes - a bit like the neatly organised desks they show in their blogs that overlook the Florida coastline etc.

Well Tim’s inbox looked (to me at least) as though somebody had dropped a bomb on it. It was a googlemail accoount too (we use those :-) ) and contained Spam, personal messages - the whole thing. The video also showed his personal Googlemail address so I presume he’s getting a few JV offers by now!

Joking aside - the perception of how internet marketers want you to think they are, and how they actually ARE is a really interesting subject.

Would you have less faith in a marketer who recorded a video from a messy office and a computer that showed a desktop full of icons with files all over the place?

Maybe I’d think twice about that too. Not sure.

But if I imagine a famous writer or painter - maybe Picasso or Albert Camus I’d be suspicious if their studio was immaculate with all their notes or prelim sketches were neatly labelled and files into drawers and arranged alphabetically.

The difference is that we don’t perceive internet marketers as being creative.

Sure there’s an element of creativity in there that we recognise and admire but I think we mainly see IMers as organised, methodical and disciplined.

Artists and writers are seen as creating their best work out of drug or alcohol influenced stupors, tortured romances and creative destruction.

Would you buy an ebook on ‘how to write a killer autoresponder series’ from a marketer who smoked a couple of joints, knocked back a pint of absinthe and stabbed his lover?

It STILL might be a great read and contain priceless bits of information.

And I think it suggests that people perceive internet marketing as being less creative than scientific or at least a ‘discipline’ like architecture or website building.

And it’s nothing like that.

The best marketers I know think outside the box most of the time and outsource the ‘disciplined’ part of the process to people who are technically brilliant but perhaps lacking somewhat in the ideas field.

You can outsource almost everything in IM except the idea. And if it takes a wild weekend in Amsterdam to get the creative juices flowing then (speaking as a customer as well as a marketer) then that’s OK with me.

There’s no real point to this except to say that I bought an ebook the other day. My payment went through but the download failed to connect. When it did there was another technical problem and the ebook itself was peppered with typos and even had ‘Insert link here’ at one point where the author had obviously forgotten to put a link in before he put it on sale.

Now I didn’t have any problem with this because (yes you saw it coming) I’m not the best at presentation or grammar. It was the book I wanted.

And the book helped me to put together a page in a certain way and to add some HTML to make it do something I wanted. Following the book I did this successfully and far cheaper than outsourcing the task would have cost.

It delivered exactly what i needed.

Surely that’s what’s important, or are we buying the IM ‘experience’ with all singing and dancing products?

I’m referring to products that boast ‘72 hours of video included’. Who the Hell has time to watch 72 hours of video? If you watched 3 hours a day (which is a LOT of IM video) it would take you the best part of a month to watch the lot.

I think there’s a trend coming in IM. And it’s about concise - laser focused INFORMATION, with no fluff, bonuses or add-ons. The smart gurus are already getting on board with it now.

The only question is, will the customers accept it?

Would you rather have bulk or focus?

Comments welcome.

Is THIS why you’re not getting on with it?

By admin | July 7, 2008

Out of the emails we get every day there are certain ‘themes’ that run through them.

One I seem to be noticing lately is from people who are just startting out in IM and are thumped black and blue with doubts, and it’s this:

‘Loads of people are trying to make money with websites and blogs so why should mine be any different?’

I have to be honest now and say that I’ve never thought this about my own products, ever. I hadn’t realised this until very recently and still can’t decide whether this makes me arrogant, stupid or niave.

And then just possibly it’s the reason why I’m done OK in the biz.

Here’s what I’d say to you if you feel that there’s just too many people doing the same thing out there.

You DON’T need to be the best in any niche or any area. Remember the aim is to provide value and make money, not to be Number One. If any of you are the sort of people who find it hard to start something unless they go at it with the intention of being the best then good luck. You might do it.

I’ll settle for $5,000 a month from a niche site rated number 47 in the subject.

The aim is to earn - we’re internet marketers not tortured artists. It would be nice to create the next Ebay but in the meantime I’ll drink a glass of wine on the deck of my little boat and watch the sun go down and the dolphins play while someone with real ambition works 16 hours a day to create a huge site……………….maybe.

Likewise don’t torture yourself to come up with a new idea because it’s hard work. Really hard. It’s an old cliche but if other people are in your niche then it usually means there’s money in it, so get stuck in and grab some for yourself.

Don’t think too much about it either - if I had to trade 20 IQ points for 20 ‘get up and go motivation’ points I would, because it’s not my (limited) intellect that makes me thousands of dollars it’s the fact that I actually DO things - launch the sites, write the products etc, rather than think about them too much.

You can always worry about your uniqueness or your branding once you’re up and running.

Take a few risks - what’s the worse that can happen? Failure doesn’t include a spell in the castle dungeon y’know unless you’re in a VERY specialist niche :-)

You just need a piece of the pie, and the intelligence to know when you’ve got enough -  because then you can sit down somewhere nice to eat it.

Apologies for the awful pastry analogy. I must be hungry.

Don’t wait, don’t think (too much), just START NOW,

Speaking of niches, we have a brand new product out in a few day’s time that is going to help you earn from the biggest and best niche in Internet Marketing.

It’s limited but it’s going to give a lot of people a huge shove directly onto the Internet Marketing profits rollercoaster. Watch your inbox.

What are you scared of THIS year?

By admin | June 24, 2008

Bird flu?

A recession?

Knife Crime?

Being Poor In Your Old Age?

Fifteen or Twenty years ago the list might have included AIDS and the Russians.

I don’t want to get into how much we’re manipulated by the press, even though we are - they choose stories at random then hype them up, terrify us and move on to the next big scare.

But ten years ago (for example) I was scared of all sorts of things. None of which happened I might add.

I didn’t put what little money I had into shares or a pension scheme for some reason - perhaps because of some news story about an impending crash - i can’t remember. Nor did I take the leap into full-time marketing (that came a little later) because I was scared of something else - possibly losing my home if I couldn’t pay the mortgage without a job etc…

Now the other side of the ’scared’ coin is more interesting. Regrets.

I always think that I regret nothing and put it down to experience etc… but in reality and if I’m being honest then I wish I’d done certain things earlier. i certainly wish I’d quit my job years before I actually did, and I wish I started a blog as soon as they appeared.

So now I’m thinking about what’s scaring me now. There’s another recession on the way (so the press says) and it might not be the best time to rent out my house while I sail round the world…..

Or will i look back in another 10 years time, when my hair is gray (unless it’s dyed :-) ) and think ‘well i should have done it then.

Bit of a reflective post - sorry.

But what are YOU scared of doing RIGHT NOW, and is the worse that could happen any worse than what will happen if you look back in 10 years and you didn’t do it …….?

If you don’t like it DON’T DO IT!

By admin | June 15, 2008

You can’t outsource a hangover. It would be nice if you could, but it’s just like toothache or dandruff - you can’t pay someone else to go through it for you.

On the other hand you CAN pay someone to sumbit articles or do keyword research for you, if you hate doing these tasks yourself and if you can afford it, and many Internet Marketers do exactly that.

But have you ever wondered how many gurus have been successful because they couldn’t afford to outsource in the early days, and it was avoiding the things they hated doing which shaped their businesses?

Sometimes you have to find your own way of doing things, or sometimes even battle through the crap and do it yourself, to make you stronger.

I’m not an expert at any of the following, but I know the basics:

Webpage design, Adsense, Adwords, HTML coding, copywriting, article submission, affiliate marketing, pdf conversion, social marketing, Paypal etc etc

I know how to use all the the above because even though I actively dislike doing 70% of the above, I couldn’t afford, in the early days, to pay other people to do them for me.

And being able to do them means I know what will and won’t work in terms of my business, and when I now DO outsource these tasks I know exactly what I’m talking about, and therefore what I’m looking for in a techy.

Now the things I’ve outsourced later in my business life, like software development, membership site operation and shopping carts, I don’t know the first thing about how it all works and that makes me feel a bit weird - a bit vulnerable even.

And I don’t like it.

You don’t have to be an expert in any aspect of IM to make serious money, but I do think you need to know a little something about the tech aspect. I suppose it’s a little like the billionaire dad making his son start in the mail room of the multinational so he learns the business from the ground up.

More than that though - it means that Tony (more than me) and I HAD to become experts on viral marketing because we didn’t like using Adwords. This led to the creation of several best selling products that have netted hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years, and also that our websites aren’t dependent on Google for traffic.

So by actively avoiding the things we hated, we’ve been forced to find ways around the matter, and to compensate and find our own ways of doing things………….and that’s one of the biggest reasons I think that success has arrived. (one thing we’ve learned new ways of doing things and made this knowledge into products).

So if you hate doing some aspect of your business there are three ways you can go.

1. Force yourself to do it anyway

2, Pay someone else to do it for you

3. Find some other method that brings the same result.

Looking back on things I’d say that the third option has possibly brought me more success than the other two put togther.

Just a thought…

Bob Dylan and Internet Marketing

By admin | May 15, 2008

I just sent my regular monthly newsletter out to my subscriber list. Over six thousand people are going to be reading my newsletter……and I think I got it wrong.

You can read the newsletter by looking at the post below this one on the blog.

The newsletter is about building a list, looking after it and not worrying about doing the JV’s that most marketers seem to be obsessed with.

That part is right - but what I failed to REALLY get across is that email marketing - marketing to your list - is on it’s way out.

Bugging people by email to buy your products still works, at least to an extent, and works better if you have a group of people with whom you’ve been honest, tried to help out and haven’t tried to wring every last cent out of.

But what REALLY counts isn’t the email you send them, it’s whether or not they say ‘yeah that Sara Brown is on the level’ or not.

If they’ll talk to their friends, contacts and customers about how you’re being straight and honest with them, them the virus will spread…….and likewise if you treat them badly.

Our lot seem to like us

And this is how we get most of our customers.

…..and this is what I should have made clearer in the newsletter.

I suppose it comes down to ‘what goes around comes around’

If anyone is reading this who blasts their list with sales email after sales email…..it’s time to think again, and quickly because the times they are a changing…….
